Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the BRICS nations including South Africa, saying the group has the potential for "truly immense" power.

The 16th BRICS Summit taking place in Kazan, Russia was attended by the expanded BRICS bloc now includes South Africa, Brazil, Russia, China, India, and new member states Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Putin noted the strong growth of BRICS and its increasing influence in global affairs. He stated that the BRICS countries have great potential in political power, economy, science, technology, and human development.

He added that they are united by shared values and a common worldview. The leader called the group a coming together of states that are dedicated to respecting each other's differences.

"It would be fair to say that BRICS is a group of like-minded sovereign states that represent different continents, development models, religions, and distinctive civilizations and cultures," he said, SA News reported.

He added, "All our states advocate equality, neighborliness and mutual respect, the assertion of the noble ideals of friendship and harmony, commonwealth and well-being."

Putin noted that they are taking responsibility for the world's future not just by talking but by taking action. He mentioned that they are positively influencing global stability and security while making significant efforts to solve important regional issues.

He pointed out that the BRICS group aims to respond to the needs of the majority of countries around the world, which they call the global majority.

The Russian president added that this approach is particularly important now, as the world is undergoing major changes, including the development of a multipolar world.

The Russian president's speech came just one day after President Cyril Ramaphosa praised Russia, calling it a "valued ally." Ramaphosa, who expressed happiness to be in Kazan, Russia, said the latter has supported South Africa since their fight against Apartheid.

During the meeting, Ramaphosa informed the Russian delegation that since the last BRICS Summit in South Africa in 2023, the country has held elections and established a Government of National Unity.

BRICS leaders will be discussing the progress of their cooperation during the summit, as well as regional and global economic and political developments and the need for reforms in global governance.
