Hiked Interest Rate Necessary To Control Inflation, Says Governor Kganyago

"We, unfortunately, have to administer particular medicine in order to tame inflation. Failure to administer that medication might result in the patient having to undergo surgery or end up in intensive care," Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Lesetja Kganyago said. In May, the interest rate was 8.25%, which has been recorded highest in the last 14 years. However, the central bank's monetary policy committee is working to bring back the interest rate to 4.5%.

ESKOM, Trade Unions Reach Agreement Over Wage Increase

South African trade unions and the power utility Eskom had been in talks since April and now, after discussing for months, they have finally come to an agreement of three years, where workers will get a 7% hike every year. Negotiators for the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), and the Solidarity Union have reached an agreement, after bargaining with Eskom.

China Lends Support To South Africa In Hosting BRICS Summit

"China attaches great importance to the progress of BRICS cooperation and supports this year's host country South Africa in hosting a successful summit and sending a positive message of solidarity and cooperation," the Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Wang Wenbin said.
