Police Minister Senzo Mchunu shared a strong plan to improve the country's police forces, with a promise to combat crime, rebuild public confidence and make the police more effective.

Speaking in Pretoria on Monday, Mchunu addressed the media about his priorities after the recent General Elections and the formation of the Government of National Unity. The minister expressed gratitude for the responsibility of keeping South Africans safe.

He also pledged to fight corruption within the police, emphasizing the importance of ethical conduct and accountability. The minister pointed out that the "crime levels in the country are on the increase and are intolerable, SA News reported.

"We need to act decisively and bring this under control," he added. "This scenario also requires that we think about what management system is needed overall within the police service, which will enable us to respond effectively to the serious challenge we face."

Mchunu stressed that this is high time to take tough measures to reduce crime where necessary. He emphasized the importance of professionalizing the South African Police Service (SAPS) and promoting positive ethical values, patriotism and a strong commitment to public service among officers.

The minister noted the immediate need to root out corruption within SAPS and take decisive action against misconduct by its members.

The police minister highlighted the goal of improving public perception of police officers, aiming for increased respect, trust and safety in communities. He underscored the importance of professionalism in police work as a key element in ensuring public safety.

"Police officers must attend regular refresher courses to stay operationally ready. We will also strengthen some existing units within the police force," he said.

He further shared advanced technologies such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, surveillance systems and digital communication tools enable police to better predict, prevent, and respond to criminal activities.

Furthermore, Mchunu highlighted the importance of equipping police officers with modern tools that provide up-to-date information, improve decision-making and speed up investigations. He said that technology not only increases transparency and accountability but also enhances public trust.

The minister committed to learning from successful law enforcement agencies globally and aims to bring SAPS to a comparable level in terms of technology and operational effectiveness.
