Justice Minister Honors Outgoing Chief Justice Zondo; Pledges To Implement Recommendations
Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Thembi Simelane honored the outgoing Chief Justice Raymond Zondo and promised that the recommendations of Zondo following the State Capture Commission will be put into action, ensuring justice for South Africans.
Chief Justice Zondo led the commission that uncovered corruption, misconduct, and the theft of public funds.
"As we bid farewell to Chief Justice Zondo, we make a solemn commitment that the recommendations from the commission that took so much of his time and public resources will never have been in vain," Simelane said, SA News reported.
She added, "The recommendations of the Zondo Commission will be implemented without fear or favor. Justice will be done even if it means heavens must fall."
Simelane stated that the State Capture Commission has changed South African history with its revelations and outcomes. She explained that before the Zondo Commission, there was a period marked by a lack of accountability and impunity, where state resources were looted with no consequences.
In contrast, the current era is based on the findings and recommendations from the Zondo Commission. Simelane emphasized that this new chapter should be a constant reminder of what should never happen again.
She said it should serve as a guide on how to handle corruption, misconduct, and similar issues effectively. The Minister went on to thank Zondo for his 27 years of dedicated service to the judiciary.
"Chief Justice Zondo, the South African nation owes you a huge debt of gratitude for your unquestionable fidelity to our constitution and our democracy. We applaud you Chief Justice for your selfless dedication to the people of South Africa," she said.
As Chief Justice Zondo retires, the Minister wished him well and acknowledged that his sacrifices will not be forgotten. She added that even outside the courtroom, people will recognize him as someone who did his job with distinction and humility.
Zondo's term at the Constitutional Court will end on Aug. 31st. Starting in September, Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya will make history as the first woman to lead South Africa's highest court.
Earlier this year, Chief Justice Zondo officiated the new Deputy President, Ministers and Deputy Ministers of the seventh administration in Cape Town.
