The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) announced a new blue and white modern Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) on the Central Line and extended the service from Nyanga to Mandalay station in the Western Cape.

This is the first time PRASA has used the "People's Train" on this route after upgrading the electrical and track infrastructure between Nyanga and Nolungile. Communities along the Central Line can now use the new, modern trains that have already been used on other routes.

These trains have features like automated doors, CCTV cameras and air-conditioning to ensure a comfortable and safe trip for passengers.

"In addition to the new trains, the completion of signaling from Langa to Mutual Line marks a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance the safety and reliability of our services. Work to re-signal the rest of the Central corridor continues," PRASA said on Thursday, SA News reported.

It added, "This modern signaling system will not only improve the frequency and punctuality of our trains but will also reduce delays and congestion."

Introducing the new trains and advanced signaling system shows PRASA's dedication to updating and improving commuter rail services. The new development will provide a safe, efficient and respectful service to the 40% of Cape Town commuters who use this key route.

The extension of the Central Line to Mandalay station is expected to benefit communities like Langa, Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and others along the line. This progress adds to PRASA's recent successes, which include reopening 31 out of 40 commuter rail routes and refurbishing 263 out of 463 stations.

PRASA announced in June that 31 out of 40 rail routes are now operational after extensive theft and vandalism severely damaged the country's rail network during the COVID-19 lockdown, according to Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Hishaam Emeran.

Last month, PRASA said it is currently reviewing the Labor Court's decision regarding terminating the contract of its former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Zolani Kgosietsile Matthews.

President Cyril Ramaphosa in April said the government is working towards providing accessible transportation to all categories of people, including persons with disabilities.
