President Ramaphosa said the people of South Africa join the people of South Korea in mourning the lives lost in the tragic incident while wishing all those injured speedy recoveries.

He also recalled the excellent bilateral political, economic, trade and people-to-people relations between South Africa and South Korea.

As many as 100,000 people -- mostly in their teens and 20s, many wearing Halloween costumes -- had poured into Itaewon's small, winding streets, when the tragedy occurred, Reuters reported.

South Koreans on Monday flocked to memorials to honor the 154 people killed in the stampede.
