President Tinubu Mourns Victims Of Enugu Fuel Tanker Explosion, Directs Enhanced Traffic Measures
President Bola Tinubu on Sunday expressed his condolences to the government and people of Enugu State after a deadly fuel tanker explosion over the weekend. He instructed traffic control agencies to implement additional safety measures to prevent future tanker explosions.
The president stated X (formerly known as Twitter) and urged road users, especially fuel tanker drivers, to be more cautious and follow safety guidelines.
He also instructed agencies responsible for enforcing traffic rules to take action to prevent fuel tanker explosions from happening again across the country.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu in a statement on Sunday urged government agencies to prioritize safety in the event of accidents or work-related hazards.
Kalu expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the Enugu tanker accident, as well as to the government and people of Enugu State. He prayed for strength for the families to cope with the loss.
"I'm deeply saddened by the news of a fuel tanker explosion in Enugu State yesterday (Saturday) which caused the death of several people, with many also injured. This horrific incident happened just days after another tanker exploded in Niger State with over 80 people killed," he said, Punch reported.
He added, "I'm deeply concerned that this is one death too many. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families as well as the government and the people of Enugu State."
Kalu also took the opportunity to call on the Federal Government to take immediate action to improve the condition of the country's roads, particularly the 9th Mile Expressway.
He said a need for safety measures and public education to help prevent similar accidents in the future. Kalu stressed that it is everyone's responsibility to act now and ensure their safety.
The fuel tanker reportedly lost control and caught fire while driving through the Ugwu-Onyeama area of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. The Federal Road Safety Corps reported 11 deaths but other sources said 18 people died, with many others injured and hospitalized.
This incident in Enugu occurred just days after a similar explosion in Niger State that killed over 80 people. Tinubu offered his condolences to the families of the victims and the injured, praying for the souls of the deceased to rest in peace and for a swift recovery for those receiving medical care.
